es el ox\u00edgeno disuelto?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>El agua l\u00edquida es una matriz suelta de mol\u00e9culas de agua. Si el agua sin ox\u00edgeno entra en contacto con una fuente de ox\u00edgeno, como la atm\u00f3sfera, el ox\u00edgeno se desplazar\u00e1 lentamente hacia los huecos de la matriz de mol\u00e9culas de agua. Ese ox\u00edgeno se llama ox\u00edgeno disuelto (OD); es lo mismo que disolver sal de mesa en el agua. El ox\u00edgeno disuelto en el agua procede de la atm\u00f3sfera y\/o de organismos fotosint\u00e9ticos (algas) presentes en el agua.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 querr\u00eda medir el ox\u00edgeno disuelto?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Al igual que los humanos, los peces y otros animales acu\u00e1ticos deben respirar ox\u00edgeno para vivir, y est\u00e1n adaptados a respirar ox\u00edgeno disuelto en el agua en lugar del ox\u00edgeno de la atm\u00f3sfera. Los peces de caza, como la trucha, necesitan niveles elevados de OD; los peces rudos, como la carpa, pueden existir con niveles m\u00e1s bajos de OD. Las muertes de peces suelen deberse a niveles bajos de OD, que a menudo se desencadenan, ir\u00f3nicamente, por la descomposici\u00f3n de las algas que hab\u00edan estado aportando ox\u00edgeno al agua antes de la muerte.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>La OD tambi\u00e9n influye en la qu\u00edmica b\u00e1sica del agua. Las aguas muy oxigenadas favorecen la forma oxidada de las sustancias qu\u00edmicas; las aguas poco oxigenadas favorecen la forma reducida de las sustancias qu\u00edmicas. Por ejemplo, las aguas oxigenadas favorecen el azufre en forma de sulfato, SO4, mientras que las aguas desoxigenadas favorecen el azufre en forma de sulfuro de hidr\u00f3geno (H2S). El sulfato es una sustancia benigna, pero el sulfuro de hidr\u00f3geno es un veneno.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Los niveles de OD casi nulos suelen encontrarse en los sedimentos acumulados en el fondo de una masa de agua. Este reino qu\u00edmicamente reductor ayuda a fijar nutrientes y metales en el sedimento. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Los cambios en las tendencias del OD a largo plazo pueden indicar la necesidad de un estudio qu\u00edmico m\u00e1s detallado del agua y de sus fuentes de contaminaci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00bfC\u00f3mo se mide el OD (Ox\u00edgeno Disuelto)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Hay dos tipos de sensores utilizados habitualmente para medir el OD. La c\u00e9lula Clark tradicional consta de dos electrodos rodeados por una soluci\u00f3n electrol\u00edtica a base de agua y cubiertos por una membrana permeable al ox\u00edgeno. Cuando el ox\u00edgeno atraviesa la membrana para disolverse en el electrolito, se consume en una reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica que genera una peque\u00f1a corriente el\u00e9ctrica entre los dos electrodos. Esa corriente es directamente proporcional a la cantidad de ox\u00edgeno en la muestra de agua. Este m\u00e9todo se describe con m\u00e1s detalle en el m\u00e9todo est\u00e1ndar 4500-O G. Eureka ya no ofrece este tipo de sensor.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>El segundo tipo de sensor de OD es el sensor \u00f3ptico de OD, como el HDO de Eureka, en el que se dirige una luz azul a un compuesto activo de ox\u00edgeno que se ha estabilizado en un pol\u00edmero permeable al ox\u00edgeno. La luz azul provoca la fluorescencia del compuesto activo en ox\u00edgeno &#8211;   <\/span><span>es decir, absorbe energ\u00eda en forma de luz azul y luego emite energ\u00eda en forma de luz roja. La fluorescencia se apaga con el ox\u00edgeno, es decir, la emisi\u00f3n de luz roja se reduce si hay mol\u00e9culas de ox\u00edgeno presentes que interfieran con el compuesto oxigenoactivo. Cuanto m\u00e1s ox\u00edgeno haya, menor ser\u00e1 la cantidad de luz roja producida.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cuando la superficie sensora polim\u00e9rica se expone al agua, el ox\u00edgeno se difunde en la superficie sensora en funci\u00f3n de la cantidad (\u00abpresi\u00f3n parcial\u00bb) de ox\u00edgeno en el agua. As\u00ed, la cantidad de luz roja recibida por el sensor es directamente relacionable con la cantidad de ox\u00edgeno en el agua. La se\u00f1al de luz roja se calibra en las unidades de OD adecuadas.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Los sensores \u00f3pticos de OD se han convertido en la norma, y se prefieren a las C\u00e9lulas Clark, porque tienen poca deriva de calibraci\u00f3n sobre el terreno, no son sensibles al flujo (no necesitan circulador) y no requieren dif\u00edciles cambios de membrana que molestan a los usuarios de sensores Clark. El 1 de julio de 2007, la EPA aprob\u00f3 el M\u00e9todo Internacional ASTM D888-05, M\u00e9todos de Prueba Est\u00e1ndar para el Ox\u00edgeno Disuelto en el Agua para medir el OD seg\u00fan 40 CFR 136, lo que hace que los sensores \u00f3pticos de OD sean aceptables para su uso por los organismos gubernamentales. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>La cantidad de ox\u00edgeno disuelto en, por ejemplo, un lago o un r\u00edo, depende de varias variables. Cuanto mayor es la presi\u00f3n barom\u00e9trica, m\u00e1s ox\u00edgeno puede disolverse en el agua. Y cuanto mayor sea la temperatura del agua, menos ox\u00edgeno puede disolverse en ella.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Si el agua ha absorbido todo el ox\u00edgeno que puede para una combinaci\u00f3n concreta de temperatura y presi\u00f3n barom\u00e9trica, se dice que el agua est\u00e1 saturada de ox\u00edgeno. Si, por t\u00e9rmino medio, no entra ni sale ox\u00edgeno del agua, se dice que el ox\u00edgeno del agua est\u00e1 en equilibrio con el ox\u00edgeno de la atm\u00f3sfera. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>El ox\u00edgeno disuelto (OD) se suele indicar en dos unidades. La concentraci\u00f3n de OD es el peso del ox\u00edgeno disuelto en el agua y se expresa en mg\/l o ppm. El porcentaje de saturaci\u00f3n de OD es la relaci\u00f3n entre el ox\u00edgeno del agua y la cantidad m\u00e1xima de ox\u00edgeno que puede disolverse en una muestra de agua en las mismas condiciones, y se expresa en % de saturaci\u00f3n.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Los sensores Clark Cell m\u00e1s antiguos se calibraban tradicionalmente en aire saturado de agua, pero la calibraci\u00f3n en agua saturada de aire est\u00e1 ganando cada vez m\u00e1s adeptos. Esto \u00faltimo se hace agitando medio litro de agua en un recipiente de un litro durante un minuto, y luego esperando un minuto a que las burbujas suban a la superficie y desaparezcan. El sensor de OD se sumerge en esa agua y se le da tiempo para que se estabilice. Conociendo la temperatura del agua y la presi\u00f3n barom\u00e9trica, el instrumento puede calcular el nivel de OD en el agua porque sabe que el agua est\u00e1 saturada de ox\u00edgeno.
