cos&#8217;\u00e8 l&#8217;ossigeno disciolto?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>L&#8217;acqua liquida \u00e8 una matrice sciolta di molecole d&#8217;acqua. Se l&#8217;acqua priva di ossigeno entra in contatto con una fonte di ossigeno, come l&#8217;atmosfera, l&#8217;ossigeno si sposta lentamente negli spazi vuoti della matrice di molecole d&#8217;acqua. L&#8217;ossigeno viene chiamato ossigeno disciolto (DO); \u00e8 la stessa cosa che accade quando si scioglie il sale da cucina in acqua. L&#8217;ossigeno disciolto nell&#8217;acqua proviene dall&#8217;atmosfera e\/o dagli organismi fotosintetici (alghe) presenti nell&#8217;acqua.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Perch\u00e9 dovrei misurare l&#8217;ossigeno disciolto?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Come gli esseri umani, i pesci e gli altri animali acquatici devono respirare ossigeno per vivere e sono adattati a respirare l&#8217;ossigeno disciolto nell&#8217;acqua anzich\u00e9 quello presente nell&#8217;atmosfera. I pesci selvatici, come le trote, hanno bisogno di alti livelli di DO, mentre i pesci rudimentali, come le carpe, possono vivere con livelli di DO pi\u00f9 bassi. Le morie di pesci sono spesso causate da bassi livelli di DO, spesso innescati, ironia della sorte, dalla decomposizione delle alghe che avevano aggiunto ossigeno all&#8217;acqua prima della morte.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Il DO influenza anche la chimica di base dell&#8217;acqua. Le acque altamente ossigenate favoriscono la forma ossidata delle sostanze chimiche; le acque scarsamente ossigenate favoriscono la forma ridotta delle sostanze chimiche. Ad esempio, le acque ossigenate favoriscono lo zolfo sotto forma di solfato, SO4, mentre le acque deossigenate favoriscono lo zolfo sotto forma di idrogeno solforato (H2S). Il solfato \u00e8 una sostanza benigna, mentre l&#8217;idrogeno solforato \u00e8 un veleno.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I livelli di DO prossimi allo zero si trovano spesso nei sedimenti accumulati sul fondo di un corpo idrico. Questo regno chimicamente riducente aiuta a bloccare i nutrienti e i metalli nei sedimenti. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I cambiamenti nelle tendenze a lungo termine del DO possono segnalare la necessit\u00e0 di uno studio chimico pi\u00f9 dettagliato dell&#8217;acqua e delle sue fonti di contaminazione.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Come si misura il DO (ossigeno disciolto)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Esistono due tipi di sensori comunemente utilizzati per misurare il DO. La tradizionale cella di Clark \u00e8 costituita da due elettrodi circondati da una soluzione elettrolitica a base di acqua e ricoperti da una membrana permeabile all&#8217;ossigeno. Quando l&#8217;ossigeno attraversa la membrana per dissolversi nell&#8217;elettrolita, viene consumato in una reazione chimica che genera una piccola corrente elettrica tra i due elettrodi. Tale corrente \u00e8 direttamente proporzionale alla quantit\u00e0 di ossigeno presente nel campione d&#8217;acqua. Questo metodo \u00e8 ulteriormente descritto nei Metodi Standard 4500-O G. Eureka non offre pi\u00f9 questo tipo di sensore.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Il secondo tipo di sensore DO \u00e8 il sensore ottico DO, come l&#8217;HDO di Eureka, in cui una luce blu \u00e8 diretta verso un composto attivo per l&#8217;ossigeno stabilizzato in un polimero permeabile all&#8217;ossigeno. La luce blu fa s\u00ec che il composto attivo per l&#8217;ossigeno diventi fluorescente.   <\/span><span>cio\u00e8 assorbe energia sotto forma di luce blu e poi emette energia sotto forma di luce rossa. La fluorescenza viene spenta dall&#8217;ossigeno: in altre parole, l&#8217;emissione di luce rossa si riduce se sono presenti molecole di ossigeno che interferiscono con il composto attivo sull&#8217;ossigeno. Pi\u00f9 ossigeno \u00e8 presente, minore \u00e8 la quantit\u00e0 di luce rossa prodotta.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Quando la superficie di rilevamento polimerica \u00e8 esposta all&#8217;acqua, l&#8217;ossigeno si diffonde nella superficie di rilevamento in base alla quantit\u00e0 (&#8220;pressione parziale&#8221;) di ossigeno presente nell&#8217;acqua. Pertanto, la quantit\u00e0 di luce rossa ricevuta dal sensore \u00e8 direttamente correlata alla quantit\u00e0 di ossigeno presente nell&#8217;acqua. Il segnale di luce rossa viene calibrato in base alle unit\u00e0 DO corrette.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I sensori ottici di DO sono diventati lo standard e sono preferiti alle celle Clark, perch\u00e9 hanno una bassa deriva di calibrazione sul campo, non sono sensibili al flusso (non \u00e8 necessario un circolatore) e non richiedono le difficili modifiche della membrana che infastidiscono gli utenti dei sensori Clark. Il 1\u00b0 luglio 2007 l&#8217;EPA ha approvato il metodo internazionale ASTM D888-05, Standard Test Methods for Dissolved Oxygen in Water per la misurazione del DO ai sensi del 40 CFR 136, rendendo i sensori ottici DO accettabili per l&#8217;uso da parte delle agenzie governative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>La quantit\u00e0 di ossigeno disciolto, ad esempio, in un lago o in un fiume, dipende da diverse variabili. Pi\u00f9 alta \u00e8 la pressione barometrica, pi\u00f9 ossigeno pu\u00f2 dissolversi nell&#8217;acqua. Quanto pi\u00f9 alta \u00e8 la temperatura dell&#8217;acqua, tanto minore \u00e8 la quantit\u00e0 di ossigeno disciolto nell&#8217;acqua.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Se l&#8217;acqua ha assorbito tutto l&#8217;ossigeno possibile per una particolare combinazione di temperatura e pressione barometrica, si dice che l&#8217;acqua \u00e8 satura di ossigeno. Se, in media, l&#8217;ossigeno non entra o esce dall&#8217;acqua, si dice che l&#8217;ossigeno nell&#8217;acqua \u00e8 in equilibrio con l&#8217;ossigeno dell&#8217;atmosfera. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>L&#8217;ossigeno disciolto (DO) viene comunemente indicato in due unit\u00e0. La concentrazione di DO \u00e8 il peso dell&#8217;ossigeno disciolto nell&#8217;acqua e viene indicata in mg\/l o ppm. La saturazione percentuale di DO \u00e8 il rapporto tra l&#8217;ossigeno presente nell&#8217;acqua e la quantit\u00e0 massima di ossigeno che pu\u00f2 dissolversi in un campione d&#8217;acqua nelle stesse condizioni ed \u00e8 indicata in % di saturazione.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I vecchi sensori Clark Cell venivano tradizionalmente calibrati in aria satura d&#8217;acqua, ma la calibrazione in acqua satura d&#8217;aria sta diventando sempre pi\u00f9 popolare. Quest&#8217;ultima si effettua agitando per un minuto mezzo litro d&#8217;acqua in un contenitore da un litro e aspettando un minuto affinch\u00e9 le bolle salgano in superficie e scompaiano. Il sensore DO viene immerso in quell&#8217;acqua e gli viene dato il tempo di stabilizzarsi. Conoscendo la temperatura dell&#8217;acqua e la pressione barometrica, lo strumento \u00e8 in grado di determinare il livello di DO nell&#8217;acqua perch\u00e9 sa che l&#8217;acqua \u00e8 satura di ossigeno.
