I tessuti o i materiali assorbono gli OBA durante il processo di lavaggio o di pulizia. Quando vengono illuminati dalla luce ultravioletta, diventano fluorescenti e fanno apparire i prodotti e i tessuti pi\u00f9 brillanti.  <\/p>\n<p>Le acque di scarico del bucato sono il maggior contributo di sbiancanti ai sistemi di acque reflue. Il contributo di FWA o OBA al volume totale della maggior parte dei detersivi per bucato \u00e8 inferiore allo 0,5%, tuttavia una buona parte (5-80%) pu\u00f2 rimanere nelle acque reflue scaricate come composti disciolti (molecolari). La presenza di sbiancanti nei sistemi idrici in cui vengono scaricate le acque reflue pu\u00f2 significare sistemi settici difettosi, perdite di liquami o la totale mancanza di trattamento delle acque. Pertanto, il rilevamento di sbiancanti ottici nei sistemi acquatici pu\u00f2 aiutare i comuni o i ricercatori a correggere i guasti del sistema e a evitare un aumento dell&#8217;apporto antropico che potrebbe avere un forte impatto sugli ecosistemi.   <\/p>\n<p>Alcuni studi hanno dimostrato una correlazione tra la fluorescenza dei sbiancanti e i livelli di coliformi fecali negli ambienti acquatici. La qualit\u00e0 dell&#8217;acqua viene attualmente valutata in base a standard di coliformi fecali dalle agenzie federali, statali e comunali. L&#8217;accesso pubblico a corpi idrici come laghi, fiumi o spiagge che non soddisfano questi standard pu\u00f2 essere limitato, con un conseguente impatto sul turismo e, in ultima analisi, sull&#8217;economia locale. Il problema principale nella prevenzione dell&#8217;aumento dei livelli di coliformi fecali \u00e8 l&#8217;incapacit\u00e0 di determinare la fonte della contaminazione (umana\/non umana). Le acque reflue della lavanderia vengono tipicamente scaricate attraverso le fogne domestiche o i sistemi settici; pertanto i brillantanti sono un componente delle acque reflue. La correlazione dei brillantanti con i livelli di coliformi fecali pu\u00f2 fornire informazioni preziose per aiutare i ricercatori a determinare se le fonti di contaminazione sono attribuite ai rifiuti umani.     <\/p>\n<p>I sbiancanti sono altamente suscettibili all&#8217;adsorbimento. Vengono rimossi dalle acque superficiali e sotterranee per adsorbimento sul suolo e sul materiale organico. Ci\u00f2 consente ai ricercatori di valutare l&#8217;efficacia della depurazione naturale delle acque reflue determinando le concentrazioni di sbiancanti nelle acque sotterranee o superficiali.  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Come si misurano gli sbiancanti ottici?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Gli sbiancanti ottici, o agenti sbiancanti fluorescenti (FWA nel settore dei detersivi), sono composti che vengono eccitati (attivati) da lunghezze d&#8217;onda della luce nella gamma dei quasi-ultravioletti (UV) (da 360 a 365 nm) e poi emettono luce nella gamma del blu (da 400 a 440 nm). Gli elettroni delle molecole fluorescenti vengono eccitati in uno stato energetico pi\u00f9 elevato dall&#8217;assorbimento della luce e poi emettono una piccola quantit\u00e0 di calore e fluorescenza quando gli elettroni tornano al loro stato fondamentale. La fluorescenza del secondo stato eccitato viene misurata dal fluorimetro OBA di Eureka e convertita in ppb di OBA fino a 2500 ppb.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cosa devo sapere sulla misurazione dei sbiancanti ottici sul campo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Il sensore Optical Brightener di Solinst Eureka ha un&#8217;ampia gamma dinamica (&gt;5000 parti per milione) che gli permette di operare nella maggior parte degli ambienti acquatici e la sua alta risoluzione ne aumenta la precisione. Il MantaPlus con sensore Optical Brightener pu\u00f2 essere utilizzato in studi per individuare siti specifici in cui i sistemi di acque reflue in loco possono entrare in fiumi o altri corsi d&#8217;acqua. Le sonde multiparametriche con sensori OBA possono essere utilizzate per il monitoraggio continuo o per il campionamento discreto. Le determinazioni fluorimetriche delle concentrazioni di sbiancante nei campioni di acqua naturale sono state utili per individuare le fonti di acque reflue e le contaminazioni da coliformi fecali per gli studi del Dipartimento della Salute e per la ricerca in generale.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Le incrostazioni sono il problema pi\u00f9 grande per i sensori a fluorescenza. Qualsiasi materiale estraneo che si accumula sulla superficie attiva del sensore riduce la quantit\u00e0 di luce emessa o di luce ricevuta, o entrambe. Inoltre, a volte il materiale estraneo potrebbe fornire un falso segnale fluorescendo alla stessa lunghezza d&#8217;onda. In genere, le incrostazioni non rappresentano un problema quando si eseguono profilature o controlli a campione per indagini giornaliere, ma solo quando vengono utilizzate per periodi prolungati.
