This included a review of the existing groundwater data and a request for advice on operation planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The existing groundwater level data for the landfill only consisted of compliance monitoring data that was collected every three months. This \u201csnapshot\u201d of data limited the assessment of the groundwater trends (was it still rising, decreasing or steady?) and site responses to the continual rainfall (was it responding and if so, what was the timing of the responses?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson Consulting proposed the installation of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/solinst.com\/products\/dataloggers-and-telemetry\/3001-levelogger-series\/levelogger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solinst Levelogger 5 water level dataloggers<\/a>&nbsp;across the groundwater monitoring network. The network consists of sixteen groundwater monitoring wells. The Leveloggers and equipment were supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/hydroterra.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HydroTerra<\/a>, environmental monitoring specialists and exclusive distributor of Solinst products in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solinst Levelogger 5 dataloggers were selected because of their:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Robustness (Anderson Consulting have used Leveloggers continually for over six years in a multitude of situations, environments, and conditions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accuracy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to expand with Direct Read Cables and Telemetry in the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long battery life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simple PC interface and the ability to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/solinst.com\/products\/dataloggers-and-telemetry\/3001-levelogger-series\/datagrabber\/datagrabber.php\">Solinst <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/solinst.com\/products\/dataloggers-and-telemetry\/3001-levelogger-series\/datagrabber\/datagrabber.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DataGrabber<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/solinst.com\/products\/dataloggers-and-telemetry\/3001-levelogger-series\/datagrabber\/datagrabber.php\"> 5<\/a> to download data rapidly (without the need for a field computer)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"levelogger and barologger 5 installation in a monitoring well with water level meter\" class=\"wp-image-4021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5-624x328.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-101-levelogger5.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Levelogger 5 and Barologger 5 Installation Aided by a Solinst Model 101 Water Level Meter<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Leveloggers were deployed with a 10-minute logging rate. Over the next few months (with rainfall events still occurring) the collected data provided an important understanding of groundwater characteristics \u2013 in particular, each of the monitoring well\u2019s responses to rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data allowed analysis and determination of groundwater recharge locations, aquifer types, and groundwater decay (recession) rates. Based on this understanding, planning for the operations was able to be made based on known data, rather than speculation or interpolation between quarterly compliance monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the high quality of the data, and subsequent understanding gained from the groundwater dataloggers, the site operators requested Anderson Consulting provide information on the behavior of surface waters (in particular, sediment basins).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"471\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-2.jpg\" alt=\"levelogger 5 water level datalogger installation using wireline\" class=\"wp-image-4022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-2.jpg 471w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/solinst-2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Levelogger 5 Water Level Datalogger Installation Using Wireline<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Four&nbsp;more Solinst Levelogger 5 dataloggers were deployed at the landfill site. The water level data was used alongside a known survey (stage-storage) of the water bodies to understand volumetric changes due to rainfall events, evaporation, losses, and pumping. From this information, site-specific stage runoff factors and pumping curves could be calculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operators then requested dataloggers to augment the current leachate level monitoring system at the site. Again,\u00a0Solinst Levelogger 5 dataloggers were chosen. Three Leveloggers have been deployed, with a further five to be installed in early 2023.
