<style type="text/css">a[data-mtli~="mtli_filesize123MB"]:after {content:" (1.23 MB)"}</style>{"id":4172,"date":"2024-06-27T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/?p=4172"},"modified":"2024-07-05T09:46:13","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T13:46:13","slug":"assessing-geothermal-potential-with-temperature-logging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/water-level-monitoring\/water-level-datalogging\/assessing-geothermal-potential-with-temperature-logging\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing Low-Temperature Geothermal Potential With Temperature Logging"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the growing need and interest in using clean or carbon-free energy, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgi.gov.pl\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Polish Geological Institute\u2014National Research Institute (Polish Geological Survey)<\/a> conducted a study to assess the potential for low-temperature geothermal energy in the country.&nbsp;The research was carried out between 2021 and 2023, and the findings were presented at the 49th Workshop on Geothermal Reservoir Engineering at Stanford University in February 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main goal of the Geological Survey study is to identify the subsurface temperature regime in the context of local geology, tectonics, hydrogeology, and human influences. Temperature measurement, logging and thermal response tests (TRT) were performed within the boreholes. Below is the design for each of the observation boreholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/borehole-design.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"756\" height=\"674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/borehole-design.webp\" alt=\"temperature monitoring borehole design\" class=\"wp-image-4175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/borehole-design.webp 756w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/borehole-design-300x267.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/borehole-design-624x556.webp 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Temperature Logging Observation Borehole Design<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, test temperature measurements were taken, and TRT tests were conducted. TRT is&nbsp;a conventional testing method for determining the heat transfer properties of a borehole heat exchanger and surrounding ground to predict the thermal performance of a ground-source energy system. The Geological Survey took regular and quarterly temperature measurements in 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Temperature profiling was conducted using a temperature datalogger as part of the quarterly measurements. Datalogging was completed using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/products\/dataloggers-and-telemetry\/3001-levelogger-series\/levelogger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solinst Levelogger 5<\/a>. Solinst Leveloggers are well-known for recording changes in water levels, but they also contain a temperature sensor that records accurate water temperature readings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/levelogger-barologger.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"763\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/levelogger-barologger.webp\" alt=\"solinst levelogger water level dataloggers and barologger for temperature logging\" class=\"wp-image-4176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/levelogger-barologger.webp 763w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/levelogger-barologger-300x158.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.solinst.com\/onthelevel-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/levelogger-barologger-624x330.webp 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 763px) 100vw, 763px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Solinst 3001 Levelogger 5 and Barologgr 5 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Levelogger 5 was set to record temperature every 4 seconds and lowered down the U-pipe on a Kevlar rope at a slow, consistent rate. Subsurface readings were compensated by a Barologger 5 that was recording at the same interval at the surface of the borehole. The high-resolution, depth-dependant temperature measurements provided nearly continuous results, allowing for detailed temperature analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The depth-dependent temperature patterns measured for the studied observation boreholes are alike to a major extent in 2022 and 2023. For each temperature profile, the depth zones associated with different subsurface temperature variability, which depend on various factors, can be identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results from the shallow subsurface (up to 2-5 meters deep) show a strong correlation between temperature and climatic conditions (atmospheric air temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, etc.), creating a zone of daily and seasonal temperature changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below-subsurface temperature variability gradually decreases with depth and is less dependent on external factors. Usually, at a depth of 15-25 meters, depending on location, temperature stabilizes and is close to the value of average ambient air temperature at the given location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This subsurface temperature zone, the zone of neutral or transient temperatures, can persist to about 50-60 meters of depth or even more. However, it shows some small variability, i.e. it may slightly increase or decrease.
