A \u00e1gua com pH menor que sete \u00e9 \u00e1cida; a \u00e1gua com pH maior que sete \u00e9 alcalina (b\u00e1sica). O pH da \u00e1gua \u00e9 determinado pelos sais ativos de pH dissolvidos. Por exemplo, a dissolu\u00e7\u00e3o de hidr\u00f3xido de s\u00f3dio em \u00e1gua pura aumentar\u00e1 o pH porque o \u00edon hidr\u00f3xido \u00e9 uma base que atua no pH, e a dissolu\u00e7\u00e3o de sulfeto de hidrog\u00eanio em \u00e1gua pura diminuir\u00e1 o pH porque o \u00edon hidrog\u00eanio \u00e9 um \u00e1cido que atua no pH. No entanto, a dissolu\u00e7\u00e3o do cloreto de s\u00f3dio na \u00e1gua n\u00e3o alterar\u00e1 o pH porque nem o s\u00f3dio nem o cloreto s\u00e3o \u00edons ativos no pH.    <\/p>\n<p>O pH da \u00e1gua determina a forma dos sais dissolvidos e ativos no pH. Suponha, por exemplo, que um fertilizante \u00e0 base de am\u00f4nia flua para um rio por meio do escoamento da chuva. Se o pH do rio estiver abaixo de nove, a maioria das esp\u00e9cies de am\u00f4nia presentes estar\u00e1 na forma de am\u00f4nia, NH3. Se o pH do rio estiver acima de nove, a maioria das esp\u00e9cies de am\u00f4nia presentes estar\u00e1 na forma de am\u00f4nio, NH4+. Isso \u00e9 importante porque a am\u00f4nia \u00e9 t\u00f3xica para a biota, enquanto o am\u00f4nio pode ser um nutriente para a biota.    <\/p>\n<p>O pH tamb\u00e9m determina a solubilidade dos metais na \u00e1gua. Metais como o ferro e o cromo s\u00e3o mais sol\u00faveis em pH baixo e, portanto, mais dispon\u00edveis para serem absorvidos por peixes e outros organismos biol\u00f3gicos. Em um pH alto, os metais s\u00e3o menos sol\u00faveis e t\u00eam maior probabilidade de ficarem presos aos sedimentos do que dispon\u00edveis para a biota.  <\/p>\n<p>Mudan\u00e7as nas tend\u00eancias de pH de longo prazo podem indicar a necessidade de um estudo qu\u00edmico mais detalhado da \u00e1gua e de suas fontes de contamina\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Como o pH \u00e9 medido?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>O pH \u00e9 medido com um sensor de pH e um eletrodo de refer\u00eancia. O sensor de pH \u00e9 um pequeno bulbo de vidro preenchido com um eletr\u00f3lito de pH conhecido. Se o pH da \u00e1gua da amostra for diferente do pH do eletr\u00f3lito, ser\u00e1 criada uma tens\u00e3o no bulbo de vidro. Essa tens\u00e3o muda de forma previs\u00edvel com o pH da \u00e1gua de amostra e \u00e9 medida por meio do eletrodo de refer\u00eancia. O eletrodo de refer\u00eancia cont\u00e9m um eletr\u00f3lito separado da \u00e1gua da amostra n\u00e3o por um bulbo de vidro, mas por um material microporoso, geralmente Teflon, que permite que o eletr\u00f3lito entre em contato com a \u00e1gua sem ser rapidamente dilu\u00eddo por ela.   <\/p>\n<p>H\u00e1 dois tipos de eletrodos de refer\u00eancia encontrados em instrumentos de qualidade da \u00e1gua. O primeiro emprega um pequeno volume de eletr\u00f3lito &#8220;gelificado&#8221; de alta viscosidade. Os eletrodos de refer\u00eancia de eletr\u00f3lito gelificado n\u00e3o exigem a substitui\u00e7\u00e3o peri\u00f3dica do eletr\u00f3lito. No entanto, eles devem ser substitu\u00eddos aproximadamente uma vez por ano ou com mais frequ\u00eancia, pois o usu\u00e1rio n\u00e3o pode substituir o eletr\u00f3lito.   <\/p>\n<p>O segundo tipo de eletrodo de refer\u00eancia emprega um grande volume de eletr\u00f3lito de baixa viscosidade (n\u00e3o gelificado). A &#8220;jun\u00e7\u00e3o de fluxo&#8221; resultante normalmente estabelece uma medi\u00e7\u00e3o mais est\u00e1vel do que os eletrodos de refer\u00eancia de eletr\u00f3lito gelificado, especialmente \u00e0 medida que o eletr\u00f3lito gelificado envelhece. O eletr\u00f3lito de jun\u00e7\u00e3o de fluxo requer um novo eletr\u00f3lito a cada dois meses, aproximadamente. No entanto, o reabastecimento do eletr\u00f3lito significa que voc\u00ea n\u00e3o precisa substituir todo o eletrodo de refer\u00eancia (como acontece com os modelos de eletr\u00f3lito gelificado).   <\/p>\n<p>O eletrodo de refer\u00eancia usado para medi\u00e7\u00e3o de pH pode facilitar simultaneamente as medi\u00e7\u00f5es com eletrodos de ORP e eletrodos seletivos de \u00edons (ISEs).<\/p>\n<p>Os sensores de pH s\u00e3o normalmente calibrados com padr\u00f5es dispon\u00edveis comercialmente, chamados de tamp\u00f5es de pH. Voc\u00ea pode escolher a calibra\u00e7\u00e3o de pH de dois ou tr\u00eas pontos. As calibra\u00e7\u00f5es de dois pontos usam um tamp\u00e3o sete (neutro) e um segundo tamp\u00e3o cujo valor \u00e9 pr\u00f3ximo ao das \u00e1guas que voc\u00ea pretende monitorar, normalmente um tamp\u00e3o quatro (\u00e1cido) ou um tamp\u00e3o dez (b\u00e1sico).
