Os tecidos ou materiais absorvem os OBAs durante o processo de lavagem ou limpeza. Quando iluminados por luz ultravioleta, eles se tornam fluorescentes e fazem com que os produtos e tecidos pare\u00e7am mais brilhantes.  <\/p>\n<p>As \u00e1guas residuais de lavanderias s\u00e3o as que mais contribuem com branqueadores para os sistemas de \u00e1guas residuais. As contribui\u00e7\u00f5es de FWA ou OBA para o volume total da maioria dos detergentes de lavanderia s\u00e3o inferiores a 0,5%, mas uma grande parte (5 a 80%) pode permanecer nas \u00e1guas residuais descartadas como compostos dissolvidos (molecular). A presen\u00e7a de branqueadores nos sistemas de \u00e1gua para os quais as \u00e1guas residuais est\u00e3o sendo despejadas pode significar falha nos sistemas s\u00e9pticos, vazamentos de esgoto ou total falta de tratamento da \u00e1gua. Portanto, a detec\u00e7\u00e3o de branqueadores \u00f3pticos em sistemas aqu\u00e1ticos pode ajudar as prefeituras ou os pesquisadores a corrigir falhas no sistema e evitar o aumento da entrada antropog\u00eanica que pode causar grande impacto nos ecossistemas.   <\/p>\n<p>Estudos demonstraram uma correla\u00e7\u00e3o entre a fluoresc\u00eancia dos branqueadores e os n\u00edveis de coliformes fecais em ambientes aqu\u00e1ticos. Atualmente, a qualidade da \u00e1gua est\u00e1 sendo avaliada por padr\u00f5es de coliformes fecais por meio de \u00f3rg\u00e3os federais, estaduais e municipais. O acesso p\u00fablico a corpos d&#8217;\u00e1gua, como lagos, rios ou praias, que n\u00e3o atendem a esses padr\u00f5es pode ser restrito, afetando o turismo e, em \u00faltima an\u00e1lise, a economia local. O principal problema na preven\u00e7\u00e3o do aumento dos n\u00edveis de coliformes fecais \u00e9 a incapacidade de determinar a fonte de contamina\u00e7\u00e3o (humana\/n\u00e3o humana). As \u00e1guas residuais de lavanderias s\u00e3o normalmente descartadas pelo esgoto dom\u00e9stico ou por sistemas s\u00e9pticos; portanto, os branqueadores s\u00e3o um componente das \u00e1guas residuais de esgoto. Isso permite que os pesquisadores tamb\u00e9m avaliem a efic\u00e1cia da limpeza natural de \u00e1guas residuais, determinando as concentra\u00e7\u00f5es de branqueadores em \u00e1guas subterr\u00e2neas ou superficiais  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Como os branqueadores \u00f3pticos s\u00e3o medidos?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Os branqueadores \u00f3pticos, ou agentes branqueadores fluorescentes (FWAs no setor de detergentes), s\u00e3o compostos que s\u00e3o excitados (ativados) por comprimentos de onda de luz na faixa quase ultravioleta (UV) (360 a 365 nm) e, em seguida, emitem luz na faixa azul (400 a 440 nm). Os el\u00e9trons nas mol\u00e9culas fluorescentes s\u00e3o excitados para um estado de energia mais alto pela absor\u00e7\u00e3o de luz e, em seguida, emitem uma pequena quantidade de calor e fluoresc\u00eancia \u00e0 medida que os el\u00e9trons retornam ao seu estado fundamental. Qualquer material estranho que se acumule na superf\u00edcie ativa do sensor reduzir\u00e1 a quantidade de luz emitida ou recebida, ou ambas. E, \u00e0s vezes, o material estranho pode fornecer um sinal falso ao fluorescer no mesmo comprimento de onda. Normalmente, a incrusta\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o representa um problema ao tra\u00e7ar o perfil ou fazer verifica\u00e7\u00f5es pontuais para pesquisas di\u00e1rias; somente quando implantado por per\u00edodos prolongados.
