Pneumatic/Hydraulic Packers Model 823
Solinst Pneumatic/Hydraulic Packers use a clear vinylon gland on a PVC or stainless steel body. The packer is connected to a 1/8" or 1/4" (3mm or 6mm) inflation line of polyethylene, or for deeper installations of nylon.
Packers can be made in a variety of diameters to fit wells 1-7/8" (48mm) and larger, and in lengths to suit the application.
Model 823 Packers are ideal for use with Bladder Pumps or Double Valve Pumps, to minimize purge volumes, or to isolate a particular sampling zone.
In larger diameter wells, single point packers can be used effectively to speed the well development process by limiting purging to only the area needing developed.
Closed End, Single Point Model 823 Packers can be installed by lowering into the well with the inflation line itself.
Model 823 Straddle Packers are usually lowered on PVC pipe through which water level and sampling equipment can be lowered. The lower packer has a closed end and the screened area between the packers is made of a length to suit the application, and may be slotted PVC or perforated pipe.
Mechanical Packers Model 827
Solinst Mechanical Packers use a polyurethane gland attached to a PVC or stainless steel tube. An inner rod is threaded to the base of the gland. When the inner rod is tightened, the base is pulled up, expanding the packer.
This inexpensive packer has a depth limit of 15ft. (4.5m) and is excellent for sealing flowing wells.
Mechanical packers may also be manufactured as straddle packers, suitable for isolating shallow zones for either soil gas or groundwater sampling.
Hydraulic Packers
When it is desired to use water to inflate the packers, Solinst manufactures a pressure vessel, as shown at left, to allow the air or gas pressure to operate on a body of water in the vessel, thus sending the water down the inflation line. Bentonite Packer Well Seal*
For sealing off monitoring well screens in bedrock. Developed at Solinst, the bentonite packer provides an easily installed, permanent seal which replaces the conventional sand/bentonite seal. This eliminates the need for tremie pipes, tamping or grout pumps.
Design
The packer consists of an outer gum rubber sheath enveloping a bentonite layer and a geofabric sock over a length of threaded PVC casing. Water enters the packer via small water inlets at both ends of the packer. The rubber is clamped to the casing with stainless steel clamps. The water saturates the geofabric then enters the bentonite which swells to seal the hole.
To prevent the geofabric from acting like a conduit and transmitting water through the packer, a gap is left between the top and bottom halves. Water enters from both the top and bottom to ensure even swelling of the bentonite. The PVC casing can be threaded to fit any commercial thread. The pliant gum rubber expands and moulds to small fissures to ensure that water does not leak around the packer. As a result there are no concerns about bentonite bridging or open channels in the borehole.
Dimensions
Packers are available in 2 and 5 foot lengths to fit 3"N and 4"H size boreholes.
Custom sized packers are available on request.
Installation
The packer is simply threaded to the well screen and casing and the entire unit lowered dow the hole. The packer can be accurately placed anywhere in the bore-hole. The small water inlets delay the swelling of the bentonite until after installation has been completed. The packers inflate completely in 24 to 48 hours.
